Photoshoot at Mortensrud Church: Gyro

I am thrilled to show you the brilliant photos taken by Eivind Røhne, at Mortensrud Church in Oslo in November last year, of the gorgeous Olivia Lindtein, with make-up and hair by Erica Poppe and jewellery by Kaja Gjedebo Design, wearing my Gyro dress knitted in both Tinde and Sølje pelt wool yarn, designed for Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk. I wanted to show Gyro both as a dress and also as a tunic with trousers beneath. Olivia is wearing size S, the second size, which has a 122 cm/48” wingspan. She has an 83 cm/32.75” bust circumference and stands 167 cm/5’6” tall.

Gyro is an oversized dress with bat sleeves knitted in two yarn thicknesses and colours. The center cable panel crowns the dress and ends in a wide neck with an I-cord bind off. Gyro is an old Norwegian female name, well suited to this dress or tunic made in pieces and sewn or crochet together with a garter stitch sleeve band. The dress is knitted in the divine pelt wool yarn from Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk; The thicker Tinde for the cable panel and the thinner Sølje for the side parts.

Gyro is graded from size XS to 2XL, To fit sizes:
UK 6 (8, 10, 12, 14, 16-18, 20-22)
US 2 (4, 6, 8, 10, 12-14, 16-18)
EU 34 (36, 38, 40, 42, 44-46, 48-50)

The sample is knitted by Grete Jenssen, aka ma9 on Ravelry, using 3.5 mm/US 4 on the center cable part in Tinde (100% pelt wool, 100 gram,  m/yds) and using 3 mm/US 2.5 on the side part in Sølje (100% pelt wool, 100 gram, m/yds. The gauge for Tinde in stockinette stitch is 21 stitches and 30 rows to 10 cm/4″ square, while for Sølje it is 24 stitches and 32 rows.

The dress is worked in pieces and seamed. You can easily adjust the length of the dress if you prefer, for instance by shortening (or lengthening) it with one or half a cable pattern repeat 12 cm/4.75” or 6 cm/2.25” and work less rows in between the increases.

The English pattern of Gyro will be test knitted beginning on 17th of February in my Ravelry group before the pattern is released. Yarn kits will be available with English or Norwegian pattern from Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk.

Strikkehelg/Knitting Weekend at Geilo

Friday morning my husband and I drove to Geilo, heading north-west from Ørje, half way to Bergen. I was booked to hold a talk Friday evening to the 460 attendees and workshops on both Saturday & Sunday at the Strikkehelg/Knitting Weekend organised by the magazine Familien published by Egmont (a Danish media corporation). Geilo is a ski resort, preparing for the upcoming season with snow canons, and the event was held at the posh Vestlia Resort. This weekend  the knitters had taken over the hotel. Above you see me holding the talk “Teknisk Strikking”/Technical Knitting in front of about 300 knitters, I am wearing the Damara Skirt from the Norwegian book “Norsk Strikkedesign. Strikk din favoritt” knitted in Tinde pelt wool from Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk, while on the huge screen is model Emma Ross with my Autumn Symphony set knitted in Ask (also by Hillesvåg). I was talking about the uses of left over yarn as well as sizing of the cowl and the belt which are included in the pattern. While other knitters were attending knitting yoga or a workshop in Entrelac.

We were three designers holding talks: Nina Granlund Sæther about the oldest “kofte” found in Norway with photos from her lates book Norske strikketradisjoner/Norwegian knitting traditions (take a look at the photos in the issuu link) and Bjørg Minnesjord Solheim about her company Telespinn who spins wool from the mohair goat. Below you see some of the colours and pullovers made of the Telespinn yarn.

In addition four designers held workshop in different topics: Nina in Knitting with Beads, Pinnedans in Entrelac, designer Anne Tvedt in Steeking & Securing the Seams without a sewing machine and I held a workshop called Perfect Fit. Many of the knitters wanted to join so we all held the same workshop two or three times during the weekend. I held three workshops and there were still waiting lists, in case someone dropped out.

There was a small shopping street in the reception area, mainly with yarn store stands but also a jewellery stand, an optician and a health supplement stand. Above you see the shopping street early Sunday morning and below late on Saturday evening. Take a note of the amazing art collection found throughout the hotel, woodcuts on paper by Edvard Munch in the Telespinn stand photo.

Mohairia is another yarn shop stand. I can tell you that the stands where very busy in the middle of the day. There was also an excursion to the nearby knife factory Brusletto. Michael went together with Nina’s husband on the Saturday and they did not come back empty handed…

Here is the view from our hotel room in the old part of the hotel. I had time for a quick walk and a visit to the Spa (with a small pool, steam room, sauna, jacuzzi and a cold plunge pool) while Michael had time to visit the town of Geilo.

We had delicious food during the weekend, above you see a part of the seafood on offer for dinner on Saturday.

The organisers had booked a separate room inside the dining hall during meal times for us working during the weekend. Do notice the art pieces in the room.

The bar and lounge area had a number of seating groups with comfortable chairs and sofas. In addition to the art collection there was also a number of historic posters promoting Norway on the walls. I met a number of knitters I knew and also new knitters during the weekend. I enjoyed having time to catch up with Nina, Pinnedans and the Egmont team. After my third workshop on Sunday morning we headed home! I had a great weekend! Thank you to the organisers, designers and knitters!

Photoshoot at Oslofjord Museum: Gillah

Last out of the designs I made for Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk that we photographed in late May, is the Gillah knitted in the divine Tinde pelt wool yarn in Grey Purple 2111. The gorgeous and talented Kaja Kvernbakken, with hair & make-up by Sissel Fylling and jewellery by Kaja Gjedebo Design, wears size XS/S and has been brilliantly captured by photographer Eivind Røhne. We have moved to the front of the small gallery building, opposite the Oslofjord Museum, and I wanted to show how this swoncho or pullover looks with and without a belt. Just as for the Epona pullover, the I choose to style the swoncho with a pair of Japanese culottes I have in my wardrobe together with ankle boots by Monica Stålvang.

Kaja is wearing the smallest size XS/S with 56 cm/22″ positive ease. The circumference is 144 cm/56.75 and I have graded it into M/L: 152 cm/59.75 plus XL/2XL: 160 cm/63″. Intended ease: + 40-56 cm/15.75-22″. You can adjust the size to fit you by deducting or adding sets of 12 stitches.

Devorgilla’s stunning cable adorns this swoncho with garter stitches on the center sleeve and collar. It is knitted in pieces with vents in each side and shoulder shaping in the gorgeous Tinde Pelsull from Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk. The collar ends in a I-cord bind off to crown the playful center cable. Gillah means joy in Hebrew and it suited this swoncho tribute to Dorota Kowalczyk.

Gillah is knitted using 3.5 mm/US 4 needles with a gauge of 21 stitches and 30 rows in stockinette stitch measuring 10 cm/4″ square.

A yarn kit for the Gillah is available in selected stores in Norway as well as online from Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk. The test knit of the English pattern begins in November and it will be released together with the Norwegian one in January.

Canola Pattern Released

The test knit of the English pattern to Canola is coming to an end and I have released the pattern on Ravelry. My test knitters have done a brilliant job and you can see their versions on Ravelry. The poncho was made for Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk and is knitted in their divine Tinde Peltwool. Yes, there actually is a pelt sheep; a Norwegian sheep breed that is a cross between a Gotland sheep and a Norwegian Short Tail Landrace (spælsau). The wool is naturally light grey and when dyed, it gains a heather colour. It has a lustre and a bit of a halo. In my opinion, it is perfect for cables. Yarn kits are available to order from Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk, while both the Norwegian and the English patterns are now for sale in my Ravelry Store. Photographer Eivind Røhne captured this brilliant photo of Emma Ross, with hair & make-up by Sissel Fylling and jewellery by Kaja Gjedebo Design, at the Vigeland Museum back in November. Photoshoot at Vigeland Museum: Canola

Next out in the series of designs photographed at the Vigeland Museum is the poncho I have designed for Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk. Named after Canola the Irish deity who ruled over music magic is this poncho with sideways cables at the bottom and on the high collar. The upper part is picked up and knitted from the lower cable panel and worked in stockinette stitch with shaping for the shoulders. The short sleeves in rib hold the poncho together. You can wear it with a belt or a shawl pin to gather it at the front or loose, just as you prefer. Model Emma Ross, with hair & makeup by Sissel Fylling and jewellery by Kaja Gjedebo Design, wore the poncho beautifully, and photographer Eivind Røhne captured these brilliant pictures at the Vigeland Museum back in November.

I styled Canola with pencil pants and Benedetta high wedge boots from Monica Stålvang, to show off the oversized fit, and did also add a belt to the front. Canola comes in one size and has a 194 cm/76.5″ circumference and a 74.5 cm/29.25″ length, the sleeves which are worked separately are 32 cm/12.5″ long.

The sample is knitted in Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk, Tinde pelt wool yarn made of 100% pelt wool with 260 meters/284 yards per 100 gram skein in the divine shade of Burgundy 2104, using 3.5 mm/US 4. The gauge used is 21 stitches and 30 rows in stockinette stitch. 

The body is knitted in four parts with cables on bottom part and stockinette stitch on the upper part. A long circular needle is used to accommodate the large number of stitches. The sleeves are knitted in the round in rib.The collar is knitted separately using a provisional cast-on so that the ends can be grafted together. If you prefer to have the collar loose, pick up and knit stitches around the neck and work an I-cord bind-off.

The Norwegian pattern and yarn kit will be launched at “Fagstrikk (Knits trade fair)” in Oslo in April, while the English pattern will be test knitted in my Ravelry group beginning on 15th of April before its release.

Irpa Pattern Released

The test knit of the long oversized Irpa cardigan finished in January and the pattern in English, in addition to the Norwegian one, is now available from Ravelry and Loveknitting. My test knitters did a fantastic job making their own versions and you can see their results on the pattern page on Ravelry. Above is the gorgeous Emma Ross, with hair & makeup by Sissel Fylling, jewellery by Kaja Gjedebo Design, wearing Irpa knitted in Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk, Tinde, brilliantly captured by Eivind Røhne at the end of May last year at Villa Malla.

Irpa is Norse for dark brown and suited this long oversized cardigan with a v-neck and a slight shaping for waist. Pine cable cover the center back, while only one pattern repeat adorns the fronts and sleeve. A wide rib makes this casual jacket a perfect extra layer to the Sigyn dress.

Var Pattern Released

The test knitting of Var is completed and you can see the amazing results on the Ravelry pattern page. Thank you to my test knitters for correcting and improving the pattern. Var was designed for Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk, knitted in the lovely Tinde Pelsullgarn/pelt wool yarn. Pine cables play on the center of this oversized vest, named Var, Norse for beloved. The side panels – giving the vest a dropped shoulder appearance – are knitted sideways in broken rib and is divided from the cable pattern with a tuck as well as a reverse stocking stitch band. Var ends in an I-cord bind off around the shallow neck. The vest is knitted in the luscious pelt wool yarn Tinde from Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk.

New Design: Corra

I am thrilled to show you another new design, I have made for Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk. This is the second of four new designs for them in the Spring 2019 collection, which will be launched in Norwegian at Fagstrikk/Trade Knits trade fair in April, while the English pattern will be test knitted beginning on the 18th March before its release. Corra is knitted in their divine Tinde pelt wool yarn in the blue turquoise colour 2129 – that Siret used for her Sirona – by my expert sample knitter Kristin Nygård, aka Quiltefeen on Ravelry and Instagram. Here is my introduction to Corra: Named after the Prophecy Goddess is this elaborate cabled pullover with slightly fitted waist. Two large cable panels are divided by a small cable that ends in a Henley neck, framed with an I-cord. Unlike the body the sleeves only have two small cables surrounded by stockinette stitch, so all the focus is on the body. Corra is knitted in pieces and seamed.

The stunning cable pattern is made by Polish designer Dorota Kowalczyk, aka Devorgilla on Ravelry. She also made the cable I used for the popular Prescott Pullover, and has a cable collection that is astonishing. The cable I chose was to wide to have on the sleeves so I chose a small back and front cable instead. I find the Henley neck flattering and decided I wanted a small cable in between the two pattern repeats on body. So that it could end in the v-neck at the front.

I am wearing size Small and photographed on our front terrace by Michael. The pattern is graded from size XS to 2XL with a bust circumference of 86 to 126 cm/33.75 to 49.5″. In the photo above, I was indicating to Michael how much to include in the photo. He did miss a small bit at either end. But never mind. The pullover is worked back and forth in separate pieces and seamed. The front has 2 pattern repeats before the v-neck part of the Henley neck begins, then 2,5 when the round neck begins, while the back has 3 pattern repeats.

Corra is knitted using 3.5 mm/US 4 with a 21 stitches and 30 rows in stockinette stitch gauge. You will find more details on my project page on Ravelry. I have two more designs for Hillesvåg to show you.

Visit at Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk

Yes, I have finally been to visit Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk at Hjelmås, outside of Bergen. Just to clarify, it is not that I have not been invited before, but because it is far from where I live, on the west coast of Norway. My collaboration with Hillesvåg goes back to 2012, when they sponsored yarn for my Norwegian book and to the sixth collection of designs I am currently working on, which they make yarn kits for. At the end of November I flew from Oslo to Bergen to hold a presentation at The Norwegian Knitting Industry Museum and used the opportunity to visit Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk. I traveled by ferry from Bergen to Knarvik Kai/Quay where CEO Øyvind Myhr met me and drove to the near by factory on the north side of the Osterfjorden. The entrance trough the shop is to the right of this picture. Hillesvåg is a family business from 1898, now run by the 4th generation and one of the few factories left in Norway that produces yarn from Norwegian wool.

Hillesvåg is an Économusée, that uses traditional craft techniques and uses old machinery to make their yarn and tops. Watch this video that introduces the factory and you will see that their oldest working machine is from 1835. They do have some spare parts to these machines, but if they do not, they have to make it from scratch. See this newspaper article from the Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten.

The ferry only took 20 minutes to Knarvik and it was less than 10 minutes to drive the last part. The view towards the fjord is equally enticing. I had worked intensely to be able to bring the 4 new designs for the sixth collection to them, instead of sending them. So revealing the new designs and seeing how they looked on me was first on the agenda, after I had met Øyvind’s wife Anette Toft, who deals with customer & designer relations, and in-house designer Berit Løkken. It was fun for me to see their reaction, so I thoroughly enjoyed this delivery in person.

Next on the agenda was Øyvind taking me on a tour of the factory. We started downstairs in the basement. Here is Øyvind standing next to washed white Norwegian wool. The washing is done in the UK, and it comes back in large bags and expands whey they are opened.

The pelsull/pelt wool is a lot greyer but also silkier in its apperance than the white wool.  Øyvind is very happy that they did start producing the pelt wool yarn in the spring of 2012. It comes from the Pelt Sheep which is a mixed breed of the Old Norwegian Short Tail Landrace the Blue/Grey kind and the Gotland sheep. Pelt wool is of medium staple and it is a woolen yarn with no distinctive creep, but it does have a good lock. These days, they make 3 thicknesses. Above you see him holding onto the pelt wool fleece which is naturally light grey and gives the dyed colours a weathered look on a dark fibre base.

The yarn has a mohair, silky feel with a halo, lustre and bounce. Despite its halo, it has a great stitch definition and depth to it. The pelt yarn also blooms and softens when you block it. These days, they make 3 thicknesses; the DK weight first named Norsk Pelsull/Norwegian Pelt Wool – now called Tinde – the thicker Bulky weight called Blåne and the newer 4 ply/Fingering weight called Sølje launched in May 2016.

We walked from the basement, where the fleece is kept; air is blown into it and it is dyed up to the next floor. Here is a close up photo of one of the old machine from 1890, that is used for carding for felting.

It was utterly fascinating to see all these old machines still in use. They made less noise than you would anticipate.

The spinning process was my favorite to watch. I was so impressed that this worker could spot where the yarn needed splicing and doing it with such speed and ease.

Øyvind’s brother Arild is in charge of developing the colours and the dying. He is also the one that has to fix the machines when the stop. They use two different methods that both give the same result. Here is a close up of the one where the hanks are slowly turned around to ensure even colouring, while the other method keep the hanks static but raises the water platform.

After the hanks have been dyed, they are dried over night, maximum 12 hours to avoid the yarn drying out, upstairs at the loft, the so-called drying loft. Here are skeins of Tinde and Ask.

Here are hanks ready for labelling and their final twist or before they are made into cones.

The machine that transfer the hanks onto cones. I was lucky to meet a number of the 20 employees at the factory and saw them doing their job. The order department was busy working on filling Ysolda’s order (to Scotland) – box number 8 – and a large order to Trollenwolweb (to the Netherlands), as well as numerous other orders both to stores and direct to customers.

After Øyvind had shown me around, I wanted him and Anette to help me make a video of me knitting for the Fruity Knitting Podcast. We talked through where we should record it and choose their beautiful Sense Room, where they hold their knitting café, in the end. Anette was in charge of recording, while Øyvind gave me a signal when there was 10 seconds left so that I could look up and smile. But just like knitters in my workshops do make mistakes just because I am looking at them, so did I when I was filmed. I had to redo those rows on my swatch. Anette also made a second video using her mobile, close up of my fingers, as requested by Andrea, presenter of the Fruity Knitting Podcast. You can see the footage in the Podcast here.

Then we had lunch, Øyvind, Anette, Berit and I, in their conference room and not in their canteen which has a view of the fjord. I told them what I have been working on and so did they. I was also asked if I wanted to make another collection for them and I was delighted to accept. Hence after lunch I wanted to have a closer look at their shop, choose some hanks that had to come home with me for swatching for the seventh collection. I also had a second walk about before my return to Bergen. Above is the entrance to the factory, straight into the shop, with the pelt wool displayed: Sølje on the right, then Blåne and Tinde to the left. This is just a small corner of the shop, that had all their other yarns, yarn kits, knitwear, books, knitting notions, and gifts. Then it was time for me to leave to go back to Bergen, pick up my suitcase and head to the airport. Øyvind took me to the bus stop, since the ferry only runs at rush hour, and gave me instructions where to change buses to make sure I came back into the city center. I made it and also managed to get to the airport in time. I had an amazing day at Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk, thank you Øyvind, Anette, Berit and to everyone I met! If you do have the chance and are visiting Bergen, do not miss it!

The Complete Andor Poncho Gang

I proudly present the complete Andor Poncho gang with all 7 knitters – all colleagues at Jotun – photographed in Sandefjord this glorious summer. My Andor design was made for Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk and part of the first collection. The pattern is available in Norwegian and English to download from Ravelry and in yarn kits online from Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk’s website: www.ull.no and in selected yarn stores. It was Nina Hove Myhre, aka FiberAndArt (far right) that wanted to knit the poncho and told her colleagues at their lunch table. I was so thrilled to hear that 6 of them wanted to join in. All knitted the poncho in the original Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk, Tinde Pelsull choosing different colours.

I love seeing their results and so honoured that they all wanted to knit it! In other words, Nina is working on yet another of my designs, I am delighted to say!
