Melva Knitted by Dawn Gayer

Let me introduce you to Dawn, another very skilled knitter, who has test knitted a number of my designs, wearing her gorgeous Melva. The garment is knitted in Knit Picks Hawthorne Tonal Hand Paint in the shade Corvallis in size S using 2.75/US 2 needles. On her project page on Ravelry where she is Dawnadair, she has written: “I love the cable placement and the ribbing that allows the sweater to hug the curves without doing any waist shaping. I shortened the body length to 14.5” and the sleeves to 18” (although they ended up a bit longer because my gauge ended up being a little larger knitting flat)…I really enjoyed knitting this gorgeous sweater and love the end result!” It was on Ravelry we met, since she is far from local to me, Dawn actually lives outside of New York in the US. Like a number of mums out there, she also knits for her daughter Amanda, whom you will meet later.

Dawn is eagle-eyed and quick to spot any spelling or number mistakes I have made in the pattern, which my technical editor has missed, and for that I am extremely grateful! Thank you so much Dawn!

Named after Melva, Celtic for ruler, a straight sweater with fancy cables at the top and the bottom. The intricate cable is fit for a ruler. Ribbing in the side makes the sweater figure-hugging, while the stockinette stitch center panel shows off the stunning hand dyed Stein Fine Wool 4ply from The Little Grey Sheep. The sleeve mirrors the body, but it is worked flat. The pattern is available on Ravelry in sizes XS to 2XL in both Norwegian and English.

Melva Knitted by Barbara

I want to show you the Melva pullover Barbara, from Vienna, knitted in the divine Wollmeise Pure 100% Merino Superwash in the hand dyed shade “Dunkle kirsche” in size Large. Barbara took part in the test knit and helped me correct and improve the pattern. I have been fortunate enough to meet Barbara both times I have been to Vienna. I have seen how she holds her needles, unlike most other knitters, since she was born with only one hand. It is impressive and so is Barbara’s knitting skills, I have come to discover as she has taken part in many of my test knits. Her former Ravelry name, before she began to share the account with her mother, was “one-hand-wonder” and indeed she is! Now, you can find them both as “Klemens1“.

Back in March, Barbara went to the Edinburgh Yarn Festival, and she stopped by at The Little Grey Sheep stand to meet Emma who dyes her own unique British yarns. The yarn comes from Emma & her family’s fine wool flocks exclusively nurtured and bred for their quality fibre. Emma is also wearing Melva, knitted by sample knitter Amanda, in the colour “Out of Africa” in size Large. Thank you so much, Barbara & Emma!

Melva Pattern Released

Emma Boyles of The Little Grey Sheep suggested I launch my Melva pattern in time for the Edinburgh Yarn Festival (read: EYF, for us knitters) and I am happy to say that I made it with the help of my test knitters and new technical editor Kristen TenDyke. The Little Grey Sheep will have a stand at the Festival, sell the yarn Stein Fine Wool 4ply in lovely hand dyed shades as well as my Melva pattern. I would have loved to be there, but know I have my own ambassadors there. One of my Austrian test knitters, Barbara will be there wearing her version of Melva, and so will one of my Norwegian sample knitters, Kristin, as well as my new translator (yes, this is very exciting and more news will follow shortly). Emma also commissioned Amanda, aka demonknitter24 on Ravelry, to make her a version of Melva for the festival, so I am hoping for a small line up of Melva. Both English and the Norwegian pattern are available at Ravelry and at Loveknitting. Above you see it gorgeously worn by Emma Ross, with hair & makeup by Sissel Fylling and jewellery by Kaja Gjedebo Design, all brilliantly captured by Eivind Røhne. Needles: 3 mm/US 2.5 circular needle (80 cm/32” and 40 cm/16”).
Adjust needle size as needed to match gauge.

Notions: Stitch markers, stitch holders, cable needle and yarn needle.

Gauge: 26 sts and 34 rows/rnds in st st measures 10 cm/4” square.
Melva cable (12-sts) measures 4 cm/1.5” wide.

Notes: The body is worked in the round to the armhole and then worked back and forth in rows. While the sleeves are worked flat. If your row gauge differs, begin second Melva cable 54 rows (16 cm/6.25”) before final row on back, front and sleeves. If you want to lengthen the bottom half of the body and add a section to the Melva cable, work these additional rows: 4 to 13, then rows 44 to 49.

Photoshoot at Bøler Church: Melva

Melva, here worn by the gorgeous Emma Ross, is currently being test knitted so the pattern will be launched at the Edinburgh Yarn Festival (EYF) in March. Em’s hair & makeup is by Sissel Fylling and her fantastic jewellery by Kaja Gjedebo Design. Photographer Eivind Røhne brilliantly captured the scene and made sure the letters “Bø” from “Bøler Kirke” (read: as in “Boo!”) was visible. Named after Melva, Celtic for ruler is this straight sweater with fancy cables at the bottom and the top. Ribbing in the side makes the sweater figure hugging. While the stockinette stitch center panel shows off the stunning hand dyed The Little Grey Sheep, British Stein Fine Wool 4ply. The sleeve mirrors the body, but it is worked flat unlike the body.

Em is wearing size XS with a bust circumference of 88 cm/34.75″ with 2.5 cm/1″ positive ease. I have graded the pattern from size XS to 2XL with a finished bust circumference of 88 to 124 cm/34.75 to 48.75″. I chose to style the pullover with a pair of Prada trousers in a mauve colour, that perfectly matched the nail varnish shade Sissel chose. The shoes, not in any of these photos, are Carla in Wine by Monica Stålvang, just in case you were wondering.

The Little Grey Sheep, British Stein Fine Wool 4ply is made of wool from Emma Boyles’s sheep at Well Manor – a small family farm on the Surrey Hampshire borders in the UK. It is 100% wool with 330 meters/360 yards on each 100 gram skein. I used a 3 mm/US 2.5 needle and got a gauge of 26 stitches and 34 rows in stocking stitch measuring 10 cm/4″ square. I wanted a red shade and Emma suggested the shade named Outback and kindly offered to sponsor the yarn.

The delicate and intricate cable is again from Norah Gaughan’s excellent Knitted Cable Sourcebook. The Melva pattern will be released on Ravelry and a sample of the pullover will be on show at The Little Grey Sheep stand at EYF in March.

New Design: Melva

I love the British Stein Fine Wool 4ply hand dyed by Emma Boyles of The Little Grey Sheep and here is my first design in her yarn – a pullover called Melva. I met Emma at the Vienna Wool & Design Festival in April and was dumbstruck by all her magnificent hand dyed colours. Emma gave me a selection to take home to test and I decided to test the Stein Fine Wool 4ply in a red shade first. Emma suggested the shade named Outback and kindly offered to sponsor the yarn. Named after Melva, Celtic for ruler is this straight sweater with with fancy cables at the bottom and the top. Ribbing in the side and make the sweater figure hugging. While the stockinette stitch center shows of the stunning hand dyed The Little Grey Sheep, British Stein Fine Wool 4ply. The sleeve mirrors the body. The pullover is worked in the round to the underarm.

The delicate and intricate cable is again from Norah Gaughan’s excellent Knitted Cable Sourcebook. Instead of placing the cable in the center and repeat it, I chose to place 2 at the bottom and 2 at the top of the body and 1 on the sleeve. I initially planned to work not only the sleeves but also the body flat for a better fit but ended up working only the sleeves flat. Instead of making it fitted I added ribbing to the sides so the pullover will appear casually fitted.

I have graded the pattern from size XS to 2XL with a finished bust circumference of 88 to 124 cm/34.75 to 48.75″.Michael has photographed me at the outdoor stage next to Ørje Brug, today a museum called Haldenvassdragets Kanalmuseum. We had planned to take photos at the Boat Café, but due to the high waves and the strong wind we used this place instead. Above you can see the stunning hand-dyed shades of the yarn as well as the cable in detail. The English pattern will be test knitted in my Ravelry Group at the beginning of February next year and launched in time for the Edinburgh Yarn Festival in March.
