Amara in SweetGeorgia Yarns Fall Collection & Draw

lookbook-coverI was thrilled that my design submission for Amara was accepted so that I could work the SweetGeorgia Yarns’ team again. Design Director Tabetha Hedrick is a pleasure to co-operate with. She e-mailed me to let me know that she was planning to use my sample for the TNNA (The National Needlearts Association) Fashion show in Washington DC in June. I was beyond chuffed to hear it! Would I be attending the TNNA trade fair, Tabetha asked. I wish I was, but the cost and my current work load did not allow it. But I was delighted that my friend and Norwegian designer Tove Fevang did go and spotted it at the Fashion Show. Then a few weeks later the pattern was sent to the first tech editor Charles Voth, then on to  second tech editor – no other than my own tech editor – Corrina Fergusson, before I received a copy with updates for commenting. Both contributed to improve the pattern and had corrected my mistakes. Finally the collection has been launched, a week after I received the beautiful photos taken by Tabetha herself.

teaser-2-daysAmara means eternal, like the beauty of the cables that travel across the back, fronts, and sleeves of this fitted cardigan. Gorgeous details, such as the double hem and deep v-neck, highlight the luxurious depth that enchants from start to finish.

The cardigan is knitted in SweetGeorgia Yarns Superwash DK with 234 meters/256 yards on each 115 gram/4 ounce skein, and available in numerous stunning hand dyed semi-solid colors such as the purple color called Empress, I choose. I consider it a quick knit since the yarn takes a 4 mm/US 6 needles with a gauge of 20 stitches and 28 rows measuring 10 cm/4″ in Stockinette stitch after blocking.

The body is worked from the bottom and up, flat while the sleeves are worked in the round up to the armhole. The sleevecap is worked flat. The hem is knitted with 2 needles held parallel, followed by a garter stitch band, while the button band is picked up and knitted afterwords. The shoulders are shaped with short row shaping and bound off using a 3-needle bind off.

Aine Knitted by Designer Shireen Nadir

My jaw dropped when I saw all the divine photos designer Shireen Nadir posted on her blog, TheBlueBrick of my design Aine photographed not only in Rome with a magnificent backdrop but also on the cruise ship going there. Aine is part of the SweetGeorgia Yarns Fall Collection and so is Siesta – a clever cowl with a triangular shape at the front – designed by Shireen. Above a photo of Shireen taken at the Ponte Sant’Angelo with the Castel Sant’Angelo in the background. I was gobsmacked to read that: “On our honeymoon, Aine was with me every evening on the ship 🙂 I am completely in love with this cowl, the texture is out of this world! Linda Marveng, the designer, is a genius”.

Shireen’s Honeymoon Aine is made in “Sweet Georgia’s Merino Silk Aran (discontinued) in the colour way ‘Goldmine’. I’ve been hoarding it forever and this was just the perfect project for such a luxury yarn”. Let it be mentioned that while Shireen was knitting her husband was sketching, so they were both engrossed in their hobbies in the evenings. Yes, one of the knitters did comment upon it. I am so honored to be part of the Volume 1 Fall/Winter Collection for SweetGeorgia Yarns with Aine. 12 designers of us where accepted, my tech editor Heather Zoppetti is one of them, so I felt in very good company indeed. The layout of the magazine with all its brilliant photography and luscious yarn pages is in my opinion trendy and clean cut – magnificent in other words.

The submission call for Volume 1 Fall/Winter 2015 for SweetGeorgia Yarns seemed a perfect fit for me; the mood boards were both inspirational and their website alluring. Tabetha Hedrick – Design Director – agreed, to my delight. I received an e-mail with the fantastic news that my design was accepted with a minor modification: making the scarf into a cowl instead. It was a brilliant idea, and easy to accept. I choose to submit only an accessory due to the short deadline and allowing for 10 days of shipping to Canada. The stunning hand-dyed color is appropriately called Salt Air and the yarn is Superwash DK (100% super wash merino wool, 115 g, 234 m/256 yds). The cowl is knitted using a 4 mm/US 6 and reversible. The finished measurements are: Width: 19.5 cm/7.75″ and Length: 128 cm/50.5″. You can easily adjust both the length (by removing or adding repeats) and the width (by removing or adding stitches in garter stitch).

Aine: A striking reversible cowl, named after the ancient Irish word meaning ”radiant,” is a rich, yet deliciously easy combination of cables, garter, and moss stitch. The textural patterning is a pleasure on its own, but becomes brilliant when paired with the lavish colour of hand-dyed yarn. My cowl is on page 21 of the magazine and on page 39 all the designers are briefly presented: “Linda Marveng is a Norwegian who loves to design feminine garments with the added texture that cables and lace knitting give. She studied art history and worked first for architecture firms in London, then for Rowan Yarns as a design consultant. She continues to design, proofread knitting books and magazines, translate patterns, and offer workshops. www.marveng-puckett.com”. Do notice the detailed photo of my Rib Cable in the center of the page and the large photo on the credits page 41.
