Look at this beautiful Riona sweater that Siret Sinimäe, aka kollane on Ravelry, made and photographed on her daughter Annika on the north coast of Estonia on the Pakri peninsula. Siret test knitted the pullover for me in size M and writes on her Ravelry project page that: “Linda’s designs are mostly covered with beautiful cables. Riona is no exception. The feminine cut, the wide double seed stitch bottom band with a tuck and the beautiful i-cord edging make this design particularly eye-catching.” Thank you ever so much, dear Siret!
Her Riona is knitted in the Blacker Yarn Blacker Yarns, Worsted Spun Jacob 4ply, which is 100% wool. She continues: “Excellent yarn for cables, but a little rough on sensitive skin. I love it!”. Siret knitted this using a 3.5 mm/US 4 needle and a 23 stitches and 32 rows gauge in stockinette stitch measuring 10 cm/4″ square.
Siret decided to make a neckline with an I-cord instead of a collar, due to the roughness of the yarn. In addition she made the length of the body to the armhole 35 cm/13.75″, not 41 cm/16.25″ as in the pattern. Annika usually wears a size S, hence it has more positive ease on her.
Here you see the pullover photographed flat on the beach, showing off the bottom tuck and I-cord ending, as well as the cable pattern in detail. Here is my introduction to the pattern: Named Riona, Irish for queenly, is this fitted pullover graced with Celtic cables and crowned by a collar ending in a regal I-cord. A peplum looking bottom band, in double seed stitch with a tuck and a narrow band of reverse stockinette stitch, adds a touch of nobility to the sweater. The sleeves are worked in stockinette stitch, except for the cuffs, to allow the cables to shine. Riona is worked in pieces for the ultimate fit and knitted in the airy Norwegian combed yarn Ask from Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk.
