My husband suggested we visit Kistefos Museum at Hadeland – on the way back from Hamar to Oslo with our friends Chris & Martin and so we did. Kistefos is located at an old pulp mill from 1889, with a large International Sculpture Park incorporated into the beautiful and peaceful nature. Kistefos calls itself a cultural destination with a twist. And The Twist is a new fabulous gallery at Kistefos that crosses the river, designed by world renowned architect Bjarke Ingels Group, Big. It opened in September in 2019.

We were visiting on a Monday, so the museum was closed but the sculpture park is always open with pieces by internationally renowned contemporary artists including Anish Kapoor, Jeppe Hein, Tony Cragg, Olafur Eliasson, Fernando Bottero and Elmgreen & Dragset. My favourite sculpture is called Path of Silence by the Danish artist Jeppe Hein and I have written about it before, see Helka at Hadeland.

A path takes you through swirls of narrow mirror slices ending in a fountain with layered swirls of splashing water.

It is made by polished stainless steel, giant stones from the forests of Kistefos, Norwegian slater, Siberian maple, Norwegian moss and flora. Above you see Michael inside the fountain. When he came out, he only had a few drops of water on his shoulders…

Martin took this amazing photo with the four of us in front of the narrow mirror slices and called it “an album cover”. So we had to be serious, Martin said. Can you spot Chris? She is actually sitting on the bench in the distance, see the first mirror on the left. Yes, we had a lot of fun and look forward to going back to explore the inside of the Twist Gallery.
