New Design: Tamiko

My second design in the gorgeous mYak, Baby Yak Medium yarn, is Tamiko. As soon as I had finished knitting my Arine, I wanted to knit another project in the luxurious yarn. The colour I chose is Grape and mYak offered me a generous discount of 50% on the yarn. I am wearing Arine under Tamiko in a number of these photos taken by Michael in our front garden.

Tamiko is a cape worn sideways or hanging down at the front and back as  a poncho or thrown over one shoulder as a shawl.

You might recall my design Emika, which has the same silhouette, knitted in Sol from Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk. I wanted a larger version with the neckline at the centre, not on the front part as on a sweater, hence Tamiko was born.

Tamiko – many beauties in Japanese – is a cape adorned with cables divided in two by a ribbed neckband. Knitted in one piece with shaping for the neck and tidy double knitted edges to make it hang straight. Wear it as you like; hanging loose across your shoulders as a cape or hanging down along your body as a poncho or thrown across one shoulder like a shawl. Tamiko is knitted in the gorgeous yak yarn from mYak.

I knitted Tamiko using 4.5 mm/US 7 needles with a 19 stitches and 28 rows in stockinette stitch measuring 10 cm/4 inches square gauge.

The cape is worked sideways with shaping for the neck opening, at the center of the cape.

When worn like I shawl, I love the asymmetrical line and the warmth it gives. Next is what Michael calls the “Batman view”.

Tamiko will be the next test knit to go ahead in my Ravelry group, starting on the 28th of April with a flexible deadline of 16th of June.
