Munich Knits 2024

Yes, Munich Knits and the festival was a blast! Last weekend I was teaching at Munich Knits in Germany for the first time, this is the second time the festival is held. Michael photographed Austrian test knitter Barbara, aka Klemens1 on Ravelry, wearing her gorgeous Ayaka and me wearing Yellow Gold Pullover in front of the festival wall. I have met Barbara several times previously in Vienna and she came to visit the festival for the weekend, luckily for me!

The festival wall is filled with swatches and was the location for the Meet & Greet with those of us who were teaching at the festival. The location was a huge building, called Gasteig, that is a cultural venue that combines events & concerts, offices, café and formerly the main library. The workshop rooms were on the ground floor and the first floor, the market hall was on the first and second floor, while the exhibition space was on the second floor with a small knitting lounge.

Here I am ready for the Meet & Greet on Saturday evening, after my Cable Knitting Masterclass workshop. I am wearing my Arine knitted in mYak yarn (who also had a stand at the festival) to be released at the end of December.

Here you see Aleks Byrd (her back facing) at the Meet & Greet on Sunday morning together with the Instagram crew who filmed us during the weekend.

In the market hall there were 49 shops having stalls, and it was the Polish designer Hanna Maciejewska and her husband Daniel who hand dyes yarn; Dye Dye Done who introduced me to the festival. Above you see me talking to them and Hanna is wearing a new pullover.

Saturday was extremely busy, while Sunday was less so with a bit more space to look around.

I met more of my test knitters, who I know from the previous knitting festival in Vienna, both wearing my designs; Uschi, aka Grinsekatz on Ravelry, wearing Gyda and Sabine, aka Sabine010163 on Ravelry, wearing Eira Pullover.

For the first time I had the opportunity to meet Melinda, the hand dyer behind Samelin Dyeworks. And yes, I was asked to pick some yarn which I was more than happy to do.

My brilliant sample knitter Nadja – aka 77stricknadel on Ravelry – lives in Passau not far from Munich, so we met up on Sunday and above you see us talking to Belinda (from left in photo above). It was 8 years since last time Nadja and I met in Oslo.

A Danish knitter who attended my Cable Knitting Masterclass introduced me to the Danish company Garna who offers beautiful cashmere, lambswool and alpaca yarns. In the green vest is founder Birgitte and in the long jacket is Annette. More yarns for me to test out, hurrah!

Here is a photo from another popular stand: Natures Luxury.

Famous Japanese designer Midori Hirose, who lives in Germany, had a trunk show with her designs, hanging on rails opposite the flowers.

Claudia Finlay is the organiser and she runs Lanamania, who had a stand at the festival. In the photo above you see her in the center. I was not the only Norwegian at the festival, designer Terje Tjelle, aka Strikketerje, was there and so were another group of women we spotted. Terje and all the workshop holders were staying at Motel One Deutsche Museum, so I had the best company during the event! Thank you to all the designers, vendors and knitters I met at Munich Knits!
