The inspiration for Emika cape/shawl came from a fashion blogger who wore a huge machine-knitted one in black. My smaller version has ribbing in each end, double knitted long bands and cables. Emika is designed for Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk using their gorgeous Sol lambswool yarn in Melange Dark Brown.I knitted the sample with 3.5 mm/US 4 needles and a 21 stitches and 30 rows in Stockinette stitch measuring 10 cm/4” square after blocking. In these photos you can see me wearing the one size cape/shawl photographed by Michael at our local museum: The Halden Canal Museum.
The cape is worked sideways with shaping for the neck opening, mainly at the front part of the shawl. To adjust the width of cape add or deduct multiples of 4 stitches; 2 before neck shaping and 2 after. To wear it as a poncho, with the long lengths worn at the front and back, was something the model Ammal Ahmed Haj Mohamed automatically did when she put it on. I look forward to showing you the wonderful photos that Eivind Røhne took at our photoshoot in June. Here you see it worn like a shawl, thrown across one shoulder and well anchored around the neck.On the neckband I worked the tubular bind off with several rounds of double knitting to make it looser. That was a first for me and I do love the finished result of that! Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk will sell yarn kits with English or Norwegian pattern online from September. The test knit begins in my Ravelry group on the 9th of September, before the English and Norwegian pattern will be released.
